  Author Note

  One day last spring I thought it would be fun to write a Christmas trilogy and base the stories on classic holiday tales. What is more classic to a Gen X child like me than the stop motion TV special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? I had a lot of fun crafting a story that captured the moral of Rudolph and adding some romance. (Not that Rudolph and Clarice didn’t have their thing!) You met Cornelius the butler who borrowed Yukon Cornelius’s name and Harris the valet who I didn’t name Hermie, but who wasn’t right for his old job just like Hermie wasn’t meant to be an elf. I loved incorporating them.

  The Institution for Impoverished Women is something entirely of my own creation. It’s based on workhouses of the time, but I didn’t want a “real” workhouse which separated men and women (and children—they didn’t see their parents often) and was typically more like a prison.
